Artist Exchange
COAST SALISH ARTIST CULTURAL EXCHANGE IN DENMARK
A Partnership between Muckleshoot Tribal Council & Scan Design Foundation
Are you a passionate artist who has experience in practicing wood working, carving, basketry/weaving? Are you an enrolled member of the Muckleshoot Tribe over the age of 21? Would you like the opportunity to work with an internationally recognized artist on an innovative new public art project to be installed in the Northwest this year? Are you interested in learning about Nordic art, culture, mythology and story-telling, and reciprocate by sharing selective Coast Salish artistic traditions? Do you have the capacity to travel to Denmark this spring or fall?
If you answered yes to the above, we invite you to apply for an artist exchange, sponsored by Seattle-based Scan Design Foundation, whose mission is to advance Danish American relations, and administered by the Muckleshoot Tribal Council. We are looking for someone to represent Muckleshoot and the craft of Salish artistic traditions. This artist exchange includes an all-expenses paid residency for up to 10 days in Roskilde, Denmark.
Applications are due Monday, February 6th, 5:00pm.
PROJECT DETAILS
About the Project
Renowned Danish environmental artist, Thomas Dambo, is being commissioned to create several large-scale Nordic Troll-like sculptures. Fashioned entirely out of recycled materials, the art installations turn trash into treasured trolls who tell a tale of protecting nature and honoring our land. To date, two dozen Dambo trolls have appeared in several states in the U.S. – in addition to his troll installations in Puerto Rico, Europe, China, South Korea, Chile, Australia, and of course, his home in Denmark. See www.thomasdambo.com for more information about the artist and his sculptures that have captured the imagination of young and old alike.
For this project, the NW Nordic Troll sculptures will be sited in several public spaces around the Puget Sound and one in Portland, OR. Thomas pre-fabricates parts of the sculptures in his studio in Denmark and then they are shipped to their installation site for final assembly that involves the local community. He and his team will be in the Northwest in July and August 2023 to install the series of sculptures. They will be unveiled consecutively and will be discovered via a planned scavenger hunt process.
